Here are some sources of help for tenants who are having problems with their finances, and in particular payment of rent.

Citizens Advice Bureau

The CAB is well known and most towns and even some large villages will have a CAB office or outreach service which visits.  Click here for a search box to find the nearest service to where you live.

There is also a wealth of information on the AdviceGuide website, including frequently asked questions in English, Welsh, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Urdu and Chinese on a wide range of topics.

Step Change

Step Change is a registered charity offering free, confidential advice and support to anyone who is worried about debt. They have a free counselling and debt advice service, which can help you get back in control of your money and on with your life. You can use their online debt counselling which is 0800 138 1111 to speak to a Debt Counsellor.  Complete their online budget form first.

The Money Advice Service

This is a free and impartial money advice, set up by the government.  It can help with budgeting, borrowing, planning for the future and shopping around for financial products.

National Debtline

Telephone 0808 808 4000 Monday to Friday 9.00 am to 9.00 pm, Saturday 9.30 am to 1.00 pm

National Debtline offers free, confidential and independent help over the phone for people in England, Scotland and Wales. You can call their helpline and also download publications from their website


Payplan provides free advice on debt and budgeting, including free debt management plans and IVAs (Individual Voluntary Arrangements) without upfront fees.

Civil Legal Advice (CLA)

This can provide free help or legal advice over the phone for certain legal problems, to those who qualify.

Money Basics

The Money Basics web-site is a partnership between Credit Action, Consumer Credit Counselling Service and GE Money, and provides clear, simple information about money.
