Landlord Law Essentials - Introduction

Thank you for signing up for this 12-part e-course on the legal rules and regulations which apply to rented property.

As well as outlining the general legal landscape for landlords, this course also explains how things will be altered by the Renters’ Rights Act 2025.  The main part of the act is due to come into force on 1 May 2026.  It will bring in big changes which all landlords need to know about.

So this course will be helpful not only for new landlords but for experienced landlords too.

Although a short e-course like this cannot cover EVERYTHING, it does discuss all the main things you need to know and suggest places where you can go for further help and information.

Often, the main thing is just to be aware that there is a rule or regulation covering a particular issue. Then, you can make sure – if the issue ever arises, that you are doing the right thing.

For example, many amateur landlords get caught out by tenancy deposits. They take a deposit but have no idea that there are rules which apply. Then they find out, too late, that they have failed to comply and get into all sorts of problems. Don’t let this happen to you! (We look at deposits in part 6).

After 1 May 2026, landlords need to be particularly careful to comply with the legislation as Local Authorities will acquire new powers to fine landlords who fail to comply.  We will be discussing this throughout the course.

Some people may recognise parts of the course as a shorter version was originally published on my Landlord Law blog quite a few years ago.  It was then turned into an e-book.  However, I have now re-converted it back to an e-course and updated and expanded it.

This is a written course (rather than a video course), which, according to our surveys, many landlords prefer.  The advantage of a written e-course is that you don’t have to watch the whole video if you want to check a point, plus it is much easier for me to update if the law changes.

You can also read about legal issues and law changes on the Landlord Law Blog, and this course will refer you to some of the posts there for further information, along with links to some of my Landlord Law content.

Landlord Law is my membership site for private residential landlords.  It has a wealth of information as well as documents (including tenancy agreements), training webinars and a forum where you can ask me questions.

The Course delivery and the index

You will now receive emails every two days linking you to the 12 parts of the course, with the first scheduled to go out a few minutes after you sign up.

If you don’t receive the emails, check your spam folder.  Or do a search in your inbox for the email heading: “Landlord Law Essentials E-course “

The course is free, but there is a helpful index which is only visible to logged-in Landlord Law members (who will therefore not be sent any emails).

The index will allow you to find all the different parts without having to refer to the emails. Plus, you can also read ahead and not wait until the next email comes along.

Find out more about membership here.

Enjoy!
