The Course contains all the Conference talks
as follows:
This is a talk we have every year which looks at all the changes over the past year.
In 2019 the speaker was solicitor David Smith – a partner at Anthony Gold solicitors and also the Director of Policy at the Residential Landlords Association.
Find out more about his talk in the video clip:
This talk was taken by housing barrister Peter Marcus of Zenith Chambers, always one of our most popular speakers.
Peter talks, not only about gas safety, but also about the other utilities such as electricity, considers issues of access and looks at the new legislation which has come into force recently.
Find out more about his talk in the video clip:
This was a talk with ARLA Propertymark CEO David Cox.
David is one of the best people to explain the Tenant Fees Act as he has spent much the past couple of years lobbying the government about this legislation and then doing presentations to explain it to ARLA members and others. So he knows it very well.
Find out more about his talk in the video clip:
This was a talk with housing barrister Sam Madge-Wyld from Tanfield Chambers.
Sam gave an overview of the existing legislation and explained the new laws on fitness for habitation
Find out more about his talk in the video clip:
This was a talk from Sean Hooker who is the Ombudsman at the Property Redress Scheme.
We did not manage to interview Sean about his talk but we have this clip for you:
This was a talk from Suzy Hershman who is the Head of Dispute Resolution at My Deposits.
Suzy first discussed the Tenant Fees Act implications, Zero deposits and then looked at disputes and adjudications.

A talk from Housing barrister Robert Brown from Selborne Chambers.
If section 21 is to be removed as the government has indicated, section 8 possession claims will become considerably more important.
Find out more about Robert’s talk in the video clip:
An entertaining talk on the dark side of private renting from enforcement officer Ben Reeve Lewis from ‘Safer Renting’.
We did not manage to interview Ben about his talk on the day but we have this clip for you where he talks about property guardians:
This was a fairly light-hearted session at the end of the day when Tessa Shepperson, Peter Marcus and Robert Brown answered questions from delegates.
For example, see this clip.
Claims by tenants, either for compensation or by way of a defence to possession proceedings which may delay the eviction of non paying tenants
Penalties levied by Local Authorities under their new powers – which can be very expensive. Or they may decide to prosectute.
Claims for Rent Repayment Orders, which can be made by both tenants and Local Authorities in the First Tier Tribunal, which can be for up to 12 months worth of rent.
