The Landlord Law Legal Basics Courses

June 9, 2023

Legal BasicsSome of you may be aware of our Legal Basics courses.  These are short text-based courses and cover seven areas of law which are relevant to Landlord Law tenant law.

The courses have now been redone and updated (mainly by replacing ‘Queen’ with ‘King’) and put in a new format.

Please go and take a look – unlike the video courses they are open to all members.  They will help you understand our legal system and how it works with little effort on your part!

The courses are:

  • Common law and statute – this one describes what the ‘common law’ is and how it differs from statute/legislation
  • Criminal and civil law – this one looks at the difference between the two.  An important concept for landlords as some landlord and tenant legislation has criminal penalties and some civil.
  • Contract law – a tenancy is a form of contract, and many of the rules of contract law apply, so an important course for landlords
  • The Law of Tort – (or ‘civil wrongs’) this is added for completeness as it is less relevant to landlords, but some ‘torts’ will apply, so it is worth knowing about.
  • Trust and Equity – this is important as the rules here underlie the rules on joint ownership of property and also agency law.
  • Land Law – very relevant as a tenancy (or lease) is a type of ownership of land.  We cover land registration and joint ownership.
  • Agency law – all letting agents (and landlords who use them) should read this to learn about the rules which regulate the landlord-agent relationship.

I hope you enjoy reading the courses and find them useful.

You will find them all here, or via the general courses kits and training index page which is on the drop-down list you will find on the Content Types menu item on the site header.
