Dealing with Death Kit – Section 5-1

Dealing with possessions

The last thing to consider is what to do with the deceased tenant’s possessions?

In many cases there will be a family member or friend who will arrange for the possessions to be cleared and (if appropriate) passed over to the beneficiaries.

However, not all families will agree to do what can be a time-consuming and often upsetting experience.  Or the tenant may not have had any family members or friends and died alone.  This is sadly more common than you might think.

In that case, you deal with the possession using the same procedure that is used when possessions are left behind when tenants vacate.  We have two FAQ explaining this:

The person to contact about this will be the deceased tenant’s personal representatives (if any) or their family.  If there is no one, then, as discussed in the FAQ when you do not have an address for the tenant, deal with the items but keep a careful record just in case.

If there are valuable items or if you are worried for any reason, you can always seek advice from the Public Trustee.
