Preparing for the Renters Rights Bill to be made law

October 14, 2024

Are you prepared for the Renters Rights Bill? The Renters Rights Bill has passed its second reading (we posted a report on this on the Landlord Law Blog) and is moving rapidly through the Parliamentary Process.

It is virtually certain to become law and probably without a lot of amendment. As it is considered an important manifesto commitment by Labour.

So we need to prepare. What are we doing on Landlord Law for this?

Training

The most important thing all landlords and agents should do is training.

After the bill becomes law there will be significant differences in the way properties should be managed. Non-compliance can result in penalties – so you need to know what those differences are and how to deal with them.

At Landlord Law, we will be delivering training via our Member’s monthly training webinars – the first being a training session from Justin Bates KC on 12 November.

It will be recorded so those unable to attend in person will be able to watch it later. I am planning a number of further members webinars for the new year,

Then, we will be running a major online event – the Renters Rights Bill Online Conference on 11 and 12 March 2025, which will be available to both members and non members.

We are still putting this together and further announcements about this will follow. But put the dates in your diary now!

During 2024, I am also delivering a number of training sessions for Propertymark, on Preparing for the Renters Rights Bill. These look to be filling up fast, so if you want to attend, you should book soon.

I would recommend that ALL landlords and agents attend at least one full-day training event leading up to the bill coming into force. Our online conference will be ideal!

Landlord Law Content

There will need to be extensive changes to the Landlord Law content to take account of the new rules.

I am in the process of reviewing all content and making a note of items that will need to be updated.  So they can be done in time.

Information and comment

Landlords will find extensive information about the bill on the The Independent Landlord Blog, written by solicitor and landlord Suzanne Smith.

I don’t want to duplicate this, so my Landlord Law Blog posts will be commenting on particular issues of the bill and giving guidance.

As the implementation date draws closer, there will be more online information both here and on the Landlord Law Blog.

The Renters Rights Bill Information Centre

This is a page I have set up on Landlord Law, which lists the various training events and other notifications related to the Bill.

This will help members and others keep up with what we are doing at Landlord Law to prepare for the Bill becoming law.

Watch out for further announcements and articles on the Renters Rights Bill from Landlord Law.
